The 39 Steps

The 39 Steps is an Olivier and Tony Award-winning comedic play adapted by Patrick Barlow. It mixes Alfred Hitchcock’s classic 1935 thriller with the fast-paced, silly humor of Monty Python. Just four actors play over 150 different roles to tell the story of a man framed for murder who must clear his name.
The story is set in 1930s England and Scotland. A bored, dashing man named Richard Hannay goes to the theater. There, he meets a mysterious woman who claims to be a spy and begs him to take her home. Later that night, she is murdered in his apartment. Hannay becomes the prime suspect and must flee to the Scottish Highlands to evade both the police and actual spies. Along the way, he races to stop a secret spy ring—known as "The 39 Steps"—from stealing British military secrets.
